Nursing shortage deserves more attention

Dear Editor:

I just wanted to respond to the article on nursing shortages ["Nursing group addresses shortages in Northeast Florida," issue of Jan. 12-18].

It does not surprise me that there is a nursing shortage. I am a student at St. Johns River Community College and have applied to the nursing program four different times and have been rejected. Our schools cater to about 5,000 students and we have a program on our Palatka campus and also one in Orange Park. With that many students there are about 400 applicants to 35 slots in the program. I know at least 25 people who have waited so long that they have either giving up and quit school or chosen a different career because it has been so difficult to get into these programs.

We should create a movement and bring forth awareness to our community and also our government. I did see on TV a few months back that Johns Hopkins and three state senates have been trying to raise awareness, but unfortunately have seen no change in our educators trying to accommodate all these lost students.

I am very happy to see our nursing leaders trying to make a change. Thank you so much for raising awareness.

A Letter from the Executive Director

Things are moving swiftly with the Great 100 Nurses Celebration 2007. After receiving over 300 nominations (a record!) for these prestigious awards, and after a marathon day of judging, we now have our Great 100 Nurses, class of 2007. Awardees come from all walks of nurses’ lives – business, industry, hospital, home health, hospice, county health departments, colleges, long-term care facilities, military, and rehabilitation facilities. All areas of the CARE acronym are included – C- Clinical/Community, A- Administrative/Advocacy, R- Research/Role Model, E – Education/Entrepreneur. And five counties are represented.

This newsletter contains interviews with some of the honorees. Check them out. We will post more as we receive them.

Last newsletter we asked for nursing stories. Eileen Erickson, G100 2000, provided this story which is an excerpt from her book, The Patients of a Saint, A Nurse’s Story, published by Authorhouse, 2003.

GOD’S LITTLE SPECIAL ACRES:

“Our Hospital was called The Acres and it was a long term care rehabilitation hospital, primarily for chronic illnesses. Neil was a 22 year old thin white male, easy-going and happy, most of the time. He was wheelchair bound due to Wilson’s disease causing a copper accumulation to deposit on his brain. He had cerebral related problems, including an inability to swallow, speak or walk. He also had a doting mother, who was a single parent and Neil was an only child. She was very much attuned to Neil and his many whims and antics.

Sometimes, he would take his tracheostomy tube from his throat and appear to be in a respiratory crisis. To Neil’s surprise, the nurses were very skilled in replacing the tubes and responded with diligence. They did, however, notice a twinkle in Neil’s eye and grin on his face when the staff panicked at this gesture. He also had a knack for becoming easily amused.

Neil was a lanky six foot, 3 inches fellow with a sparse crop of reddish hair. He weighed only 150 pounds and seemed to be all arms and legs when the nurses transferred him from wheelchair to bed and back. One day, while I was in charge, I felt a jolt and rumble as if a very heavy object had fallen and shook the building. We were on the second floor. The staff became frightened with the thought of a bomb or explosion or heaven forbid, an attack on the country. Everyone was running around attempting to discover what happened, when the voiceless, wheelchair-bound man, Neil came flying down the hall. His arms were flapping and his face reddened with an expression of delight. He was making glottal sounds that were so familiar to us all. In a frustrated tone I said, “not now, Neil, we are trying to find out what happened, didn’t you feel the movement of the building just a minute ago?” He squealed and thumped his index finger on the letter board on his lap tray atop his electric wheelchair. “What Neil,” I snapped thinking he was pulling another joke or antic to get attention. “Can’t you see we’re trying to find out what happened, now stop it,” I said in frustration. Then, I stopped and listened to him, not with my ears, but with my eyes.

Right in front of me was the answer I was seeking. E A R T H Q U A K E, he spelled over and over again, “earthquake”. Sure enough, on the news report, an announcer from his TV above the bed reported that Ohio had experienced an earthquake, which is unexpected news for our region. Our own reported, Neil, was correct and he smiled a wide grin and screech of joy.

This episode taught me a lesson in what disability was and was not. I was the disabled one; I didn’t listen to my patient when he tried to “speak” to me in the only way he could. His mother beamed with pride at her son’s amazing feat. He was the unofficial reporter for the Acres. From that day on, I made it a point to “listen” to Neil and use all my senses for the other “Neils” that were surely to follow.”

A vendor fair will open the event at 5:00pm. The dinner and awards ceremony will be at 7:00pm. The celebration will feature, entertainment, video bios, speakers, dinner, dancing and lots of fun. Tickets are $50.00 each. All 2007 Great 100 Award Recipients get one free ticket for themselves. The Nightingale Society will get a discount of $5.00 off of their ticket price, but must purchase each ticket separately to get the $5.00 discount for both tickets. (limit of 2 individual tickets) Come join us in honoring these important people. Parking is available in the Hyatt garage for $8.00 per vehicle; valet is available for $15.00 per vehicle. Parking at meters are also acceptable.
