An interview with Karen Crosson

What do you enjoy most about being a nurse?
Being able to make a difference in someone else's life.

When did you decide that you wanted a career in healthcare?
From childhood; I was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 7, so I sort of grew up in the healthcare world and saw what good it had to offer as well as at times the not so good...I wanted to make a difference.

Is there someone who inspired you to become a nurse?
My mother; she has always been my biggest supporter. Even with the limitations being a diabetic could bring, she was always the one who encouraged me that I could do anything I put my mind to.

What trends do you see for healthcare?
A few years ago due in part to financial restraints and insurance reimbursement some of the actual "caring" in nursing was lost. I see a big focus coming back to giving holistic care to the patient. I think this turn will show greater patient satisfaction and recovery rate.

Do you have any advice for someone who might be considering a career in nursing?
You must be willing to give of yourself. Being a nurse can be great career, but when you see it as your vocation, it can bring some of the greatest joys to your life.
